Product development is a different animal

Yes product development is a different animal than that of customized application development. Few characteristics of the product development are as follows:

1. Any new product development is focused on innovation.And for that requires lots of ideas to generate (Needs To Think Widely).

2. Market research teams apply different techniques to encourage ideas within the internal and the external customers.

3. Brainstorming is the cheapest and important technique used by many companies to generate ideas for the future products.

4. Innovation is the continuous process in any product development project requirement evolves with changing product dynamics where as in typical application development project specifications are fixed.

5. One more difference is product should be open to evolution,scalability and future enhancements while application should work in the given environment.

6. Mainly the iterative process is followed during any product development as that of waterfall model in application development.
